Diamond Hunt - Lesson 1 - Planning

SCRATCH PROGRAMMING TASK

Lesson Objectives

 - understand and summarise the programming task requirements
 - revise knowledge of flowcharts
 - plan programming task


Starter

Set up a new folder called 'Diamond Hunt' in your SITES - Computer Science folder

Download and save the following 2 files to your 'Diamond Hunt' folder:

  1. Resource 1 - Task Sheet
  2. Resource 2 - Diamond Hunt Game

Main

Red Task:
Read through Resource 1 - Task Sheet and on paper make a  list of ALL the things your game must do.


Orange Task:

For your programming task you will need to show evidence of planning, using flowcharts. Here's a reminder of flowchart symbols and what they represent.







Practise Task: On paper, draw a simple flowchart for 'Making a Cup of Tea'.



Green Task
Set up an account in draw.io and use it to create a flowchart to show what must happen in your 'Diamond Hunt' game.

Look at the Prezi to gain a further understanding of the task

Unit 1 Web Exam - Building Pages from a Template

Firstly, you should make sure that you have set up the Template for your page  - see last lesson's blog post.

In today's lesson you need to make the 3 main pages for your Recycling website, using the template you set up last lesson. 

You will need:

 - a Home page
 - a Benefits page
 - a Recycling page

Spend the rest of the lesson adding the text and images just as you have on your Powerpoint draft. Use the exam paper (green) in your folder to ensure each page includes all that it should.

Scratch - Create Your Own Game




In your final bit of preparation before starting your assessment you are going to have a go at designing a game of your own from scratch!

Red Task
Easy

 Create a Maze Game (eg: Pac-Man)
 Use your own sprites - one has to avoid the other or the game ends!
 Use your own background
 Must have a finish point

Orange Task
Medium

 Make a timer
 Make a score

Green Task
Hard

 Make multiple levels - different backgrounds
 Make collectables - eg good objects - coins, keys
 Make it two player (race against each other)

Rules
 You only have 1 lesson to create the game
 Use your knowledge from previous tasks – you can open previous tasks
to have a look at the code
 You may use the scratch website for ideas – http://scratch.mit.edu/

Scratch Programming - Lesson 3 - Variables

Lesson Objectives
Create and program variables using Scratch

Starter

What is a variable?
How can they be used in a computer game?






Main
Red Task:
Task 1: Creating a Variable
a) Open your Scratch game and create a 'score' variable












Orange Task
Task 2: Enemy Score
a) Add script to your main character that sets the score to '0' when the game starts







b) Add script to your 'enemy' that will decrease the score by 10 points (-10) when you hit it













Green Task
Task 3: Collecting Points
a) Load or create a sprite to act as a way to collect points (coin, heart, jewel etc.)

b) Add script to your 'good item' that will increase the score by 10 points when you collect it. (Make sure it hides once collected.)


Extension

Try adding a life or health variable into the game that you receive achieving a particular task or after a set amount of time.


Plenary

a) Open your Scratch Evidence Document
b) Complete the Lesson 3 section
c) Save your work

Create a powerpoint version of the Future Soundz website. Make sure you use MASTER SLIDE to create a template for all the pages.

Look at these banners and choose one to write about.

Who is the audience?

Why is it effective?
Are the colours appropriate? Why?
Is the font appropriate? Why?

As part of the exam you will be asked to create a banner for  website. We shall be using exam resources from a previous exam on the topic of recycling. 

OUTCOME: Create a banner for a recycling website.

It needs to:

  • Suitable for recycling (What does that mean?)
  • Include suitable text
  • Include the logo provided

Software - Utility Software

 - identify different types of system utilities (Utility Software) and their function

Utility Software is used to make sure your computer is safe/secure and running efficiently.
Examples are:

  1. anti-virus
  2. spyware protection

b) Add some code blocks to your game for the enemy sprite that:
  • makes the enemy sprite move in a random direction
  • if touching the edge bounce away
Try experimenting with the degrees and steps

a) Edit the code blocks of your main character sprite to include an 'If Else' statement
Try changing the 'mouse down?' block and the timings on 'say'

Storyboards - Design Choices

Lesson Objectives

Develop project planning skills using storyboard techniques

Starter

1. Download the storyboard templates by clicking here
2. Save them all in your Storyboard folder in SITES> DA203SPB > Evidence > Storyboards


Main

Red Task:
Take photos of EACH of your completed hand drawn storyboards and save them in your folder SITES > DA203SPB > Evidence > Storyboards

You will need at least the following:

Insert the images into your storyboards as shown and complete the rules that apply to that screen as shown:
