Unit 1 - Computation & Algorithms Lesson 1

Lesson Objectives

Demonstrate sequencing skills using flowcharts

Starter

2. Work with a partner - one of you should be the 'programmer' and the other should be the 'computer'
3. Try to complete the puzzle by following your 'programmers' instructions exactly.
4. You can only use words to communicate. No pointing!

Main

What is an Algorithm?

Task 2:
a) Go to https://www.draw.io/ and create a flowchart for making toast
b) Print your Flowchart when you have finished and store in your folder

Future Worlds - Moodboard

MOODBOARD

Before you start on any detailed design work you must create a moodboard. This is where you communicate your initial design ideas for your game. You should use it to get feedback from your game testers.

The moodboard should include inspirational materials/images for:

  • the game genre and style
  • settings/environments
  • the characters
  • any music, sound effects or speech
  • anything else you think is important

You should annotate your moodboard to explain your ideas.

Create your moodboard.

Agorithms & Flowcharts

Algorithms and Flowcharts: Lesson 1

Lesson Objective - To demonstrate sequencing skills using flowcharts

OUTCOME - You will create a flowchart using Draw io

Starter

What is an Algorithm?

Write a definition of an Algorithm on your post it note trying to use some or all of the following key words

algorithm         instructions          solve                sequence       order        problem

Thinking Point: Why are algorithms so important in Computing?

Red Task

Introduction to Flowcharts

Look at this page from BBC Bitesize for more help

Amber Task

a) Go to https://www.draw.io/ and create a flowchart for EACH TASK

Diamond Hunt - Planning - Lesson 1 & 2

SCRATCH PROGRAMMING TASK

Lesson Objectives

 - understand and summarise the programming task requirements
 - revise knowledge of flowcharts
 - plan programming task

Starter

Download and save the following 2 files to your 'Diamond Hunt' folder:
  1. Resource 1 - Task Sheet
  2. Resource 2 - Diamond Hunt Game

Main

Red Task:
Read through Resource 1 - Task Sheet and on paper make a  list of ALL the things your game must do.

Amber Task:

For your programming task you will need to show evidence of planning, using flowcharts. Here's a reminder of flowchart symbols and what they represent.

Practise Task:
On paper, plan your flowchart, using the sheet provided.

Green Task
Set up an account in draw.io and use it to create a flowchart to show what must happen in your 'Diamond Hunt' game.
